We are truly honoured to welcome Nobel Prize laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah for an evening of conversation with critic and author Minoli Salgado at our Media, Arts and Humanities Public Lecture.  

Abdulrazak Gurnah is an Emeritus Professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent and, in 2021, he was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature "for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents". Abdulrazak is the distinguished author of the highly acclaimed novels Memory of Departure, Pilgrims Way, Dottie, Paradise, Admiring Silence, By The Sea, Desertion, The Last Gift, and Gravel Heart. His fourth novel, Paradise, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1994 and he was on the for the Man Booker Prize in 2016.  

We are also excited to welcome back to Sussex Minoli Salgado, who completed her bachelor's degree here and went on to work as Professor of English and the Co-Director of the Centre for Colonial and Postcolonial Studies. Minoli, now Professor of International Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University, is the author of Writing Sri Lanka and a number of works of fiction, including A Little Dust on the EyesBroken Jaw (2019). 

As our first Media, Arts and Humanities Public Lecture, this event is highly significant for our School and wider University. We warmly invite all staff, students and members of the public to join us.
