Module Outline

This module will explore the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability and introduce quantitative methods to assess the overall sustainability. Students will gain hands-on experience in calculating the cumulative energy and exergy consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions for industrial, agricultural and biotechnological processes. Risk management and decision making methods will be discussed.

At the end of the module, students will be able to
- Apply exergy analysis to assess sustainability of a process or system,
- Develop innovative solutions to improve the thermo-economic sustainability of a process
- Apply risk management and decision making methods in engineering projects.

The syllabus covers the following AHEP4 learning outcomes: C1, C2, C3, C6, C7, C8, C12, C17, C18, M1, M2, M3, M6, M7, M8, M12, M17, M18

Module learning outcomes

apply the methods that they have learned to assess the cumulative energy and exergy consumption, total emissions, and sustainability index of engineering processes

understand the requirement for engineering activities to promote sustainable development and ability to apply quantitative techniques where appropriate

understand risk issues, including health & safety, environmental and commercial risk, risk assessment and risk management techniques, and an ability to evaluate commercial risk

apply their skills in problem solving, communication, information retrieval, working with others and the effective use of engineering software
