Module Outline

This is the first of two modules engaging with theories of community organising through a combination of academic learning and community work. It is designed to build student understanding of work within different communities, equipping them with the knowledge to establish, undertake and reflect on a placement. It also serves as a stand-alone elective module for those interested in theories underpinning community organisation and activism. It, therefore, interrogates what we understand by ‘leadership’ and ‘social justice’, critically analysing key terms such as ‘development’ and ‘empowerment’. Students will explore issues that impact communities they are interested in, forging links between their discipline and ways in which ‘community work’ can be undertaken.

Full Module Description

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the opportunities, benefits and challenges surrounding successful volunteering and community engagement within a specific context.

Reflect on the appropriate skills needed to support the aims and objectives of specific community and voluntary contexts.

Demonstrate a critical understanding of key concepts, such as ‘social justice’, and explore how these concepts are understood in practice.
