Module Outline

This module considers cognitive science as a discipline in its own right, with a distinctive approach to studying the mind. Students will be introduced to the range of techniques and tools that cognitive scientists use to study the mind. They will learn about the main theoretical models that cognitive scientists are currently using, and how those models can explain various aspects of cognition. The module covers both the achievements that cognitive scientists have made, and the challenges that lie ahead.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate an historical understanding of the central concepts of cognitive science.

Explain the challenges involved in integrating the various sub-disciplines of cognitive science, and analyse some of the proposed methods of overcoming these challenges.

Discuss and critically evaluate various cognitive scientific theories of how the mind is organized.

Demonstrate an understanding of the information-processing view of cognition, its variations, and some recent challenges to it.
