Why do we study the media? How do we do research, ask new questions, investigate and discover new ideas in media and communications?

On this module, you'll learn about the tools, approaches and ethical considerations you'll need to consider during your studies. It draws on the wide expertise within the school. 

Topics covered include:

  • research planning and design
  • research ethics
  • conducting interviews and focus groups
  • archival analysis
  • analysing still and moving images;
  • textual analysis.

You'll develop new research methods, as well as interpret research completed by the faculty itself.

Module learning outcomes

  • Critically understand the principles and practices that underlie a range of methodological traditions and approaches in the field.
  • Critically understand the principles and practices of research methods in relation to research ethics.
  • Critically understand the principles and practices of research methods in relation to their own research interests.
