In this module we explore the role of women as music makers across genres and epochs, and hence “histories” (plural) of women in music.
The module is not structured as a chronological survey but topics are grouped according to issues of genre and identity, e.g. women in noise music or lesbian approaches to musicology.
The module draws from the fields of musicology, music theory, journalism, feminist studies, and cultural studies.
To take this course you don't need to be able to read music but a familiarity with the basics is recommended. The module and its assessments are self-selecting in terms of prerequisite knowledge.
Module learning outcomes
- Apply current and sophisticated methodologies in gender theory to the analysis of music
- Critically evaluate arguments and assumptions pertaining to music鈥檚 relationship to gender across a variety of genres and historical epochs
- Initiate and carry out a presentation that is informed by the critical methods and techniques explored in the module
- Extend independent research skills and apply them to a written project
- Communicate ideas about the gendering of music history and its canons to both specialist and non-specialist audiences
