The Conduit Club
The Conduit Club is an exclusive members club in London. Ethically focused, it was established to bring people together who would promote social change across the world. In 2019, they hosted a fundraising dinner to support the Mandela Scholarship at Sussex.
When Albie Sachs agreed to give the Draper Lecture at Sussex in March 2020, he also agreed to host a fundraising dinner in London to raise funds for the Mandela Scholarship. Paul Van Zyl, a human rights lawyer from South Africa, very kindly offered to host the dinner at his club, The Conduit Club. A pre-dinner conversation between Albie Sachs and Helena Kennedy QC in the company of the Vice-Chancellor and the Honourable Thembi Tambo, the South African High Commissioner, made for a fabulous night out.
It also provided an opportunity for Mandela Scholars and other African students to meet with alumni, to discuss their time at Sussex and their aspirations.
The generosity of Paul and The Conduit Club meant that Sussex could sell tickets to raise funds for the Mandela Scholarship. In a single night we raised more than £20,000, which enabled us to offer two further Mandela Scholarships, creating two more life-changing opportunities.
It was a great night out, hosting a table and meeting Sussex alumni. I gained so much from the experience and that people were so supportive of Scholarships and students was encouraging and inspiring.” Mpoki mwakalukwa (development economics 2021)
