Newton fund provides new opportunity for doctoral students in India

The UK and India have agreed a five year programme of collaboration including .

Newton-Bhabha PhD Placements will sponsor UK and Indian PhD students to spend a period of their study (3 to 6 months) in Indian and UK higher education institutions taking place between March 2015 and March 2016.

 The Programme is envisaged to:

  1. Develop individual capacity through international training and development opportunities.
  2. Increase the number of highly trained researchers in the UK and India with international experience, able to contribute to the absorptive capacity for research and innovation and thus bring about economic and social benefits.
  3. Build cultural understanding, and foster long-term sustainable research collaborations.
  4. Develop international joint training pathways.
  5. Increase awareness of the research strengths of the UK and India.

Cost covered include:

  1. Visa fee, Economy class international airfares and overseas medical insurance incurred by PhD students.
  2. In-country costs including accommodation and stipend for PhD students.

 The is part of the UK’s official development assistance utilising £375 million fund - £75 million a year for 5 years starting 2014-15. Its aim is to develop science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of certain countries (including Brazil, Chile, China, Columbia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa and wider Africa, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam).
