Research Excellence Framework (REF) Results

The outcome of a review of research in the UK was published on Thursday 18 December 2014.  The results of the government-commissioned exercise show that over 75% of research activity at Sussex is categorised as ‘world leading’ (4*, 28%) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*, 48%) in terms of originality, significance and rigour.  The full news story on Sussex’s performance is available here and information on other institutions can be accessed via the REF website ().

Researcher-Led Initiative Fund: Spring Call

We are pleased to announce the spring call for applications to the Researcher-Led Initative Fund.

This fund supports research staff and doctoral researchers to organise and run their own development events and activities. We are keen to sponsor initiatives that benefit a broad range of researchers (across disciplines and career stages), and which expand or build on current provision for researchers.  Types of activity that might be funded include:

  • Career development forum
  • Networking event, or regular networking forum
  • An seminar or conference programme
  • Journal club
  • A workshop to address a specific development need (not already offered at Sussex)

Applications to the RLI fund are invited from researchers of all career stages (you must be currently registered for a doctoral degree at Sussex, or hold a contract of employment to conduct research or as a member of faculty)

We would normally expect applications to be for less than £1,000, and if your application is successful, you will be asked to share the evaluation of your initiative with the Doctoral School.

The deadline for this call is 5pm on Friday 13th February 2015. For the application form and application guidance see our funding pages.

Higher Education Internationalisation and Mobility

The Doctoral School is delighted to be working with the Centre for Higher Education and Equity Research (CHEER) on a European Commission funded project on how principles of equity and inclusion can be applied to internationalisation strategies and programmes in higher education and on developing research and innovation capacity in this field.  For more information please see the CHEER website.
