Preparatory Study - MSc Quantum Technology

Studying the MSc in Quantum Technology

On the MSc in Quantum Technology, no previous specialist knowledge in the areas in which we offer projects is assumed, but a good working knowledge of both mathematics and modern physics will be assumed. Some topics of particular importance are listed below. Prospective students are advised to revise them, or acquaint themselves with them, before attending the degree course.

Self-Evaluation Test

Are you ready for your MSc studies? You are strongly encouraged to take this self-evaluation test covering many of the important topics below. This will identify any areas that might need revision or further study.

Important Topics

The topics to revise depend on the research topic you choose to study but I would recommend becoming familiar with:

  • Atomic physics: atomic energy levels, spectral lines

  • Fundamentals of Quantum mechanics

  • Fundamentals Thermodynamics and statistical physics

  • Fundamentals of Electromagnetic Fields and Electrodynamics

  • Fundamentals of Optics and propagation optical beams

Textbooks and Reading

For the potential research topic in the MSc in Frontiers in Quantum Technology, any of the following books are suggested to supply some general introductory reading:

  • Michael A. Nielsen and Isaac Chuang, Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, Cambridge University Press.
  • Stephen M. Barnett, Quantum Information, Oxford Master Series.
  • Pradip K. Gosh, Ion Traps, Clarendon Press.
  • C. Gerry and P. Knight, (2004) Introductory Quantum Optics, Cambridge University Press.
  • Amnon Yariv and Pochi Yeh, Photonics: Optical Electronics in Modern Communications, Oxford University Press.
  • John David Jackson, Classical Electrodynamics, John Wiley & Sons.
