Some History
In 1973 Sussex became the first University in the UK, and perhaps the world, to have students graduate with a degree in Neuroscience.
We have a reputation for innovation and exploration of new fields, pioneering research in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Cognition, Computational Neuroscience and, most recently, Consciousness Science.
Below are three essays, all personal in tone, which describe some aspects of the development of Neuroscience at Sussex. These essays were first published in 2011 in “Making the Future”.
The first of the essays was written by our beloved colleague Mike Land, who was a key figure in neuroscience at Sussex. Mike very sadly passed away at the end of 2020; please see this page for some reflections.
